One Voice Net Coaching Support

One Voice Blackburn is helping to create netball coaches of the future.

In a project that is supported and funded by Sport England, One Voice aims to recruit and train up to 12 netball coaches in Blackburn and Darwen as part of a 1V Netball Academy.

It follows the success of the 1V Netball sessions that have been taking place for over two years. Currently over 30 young people enjoy the benefits of netball coaching every Sunday by a qualified England Netball Level 2 Coach.

A comprehensive training programme aims to take volunteers to a UKCC Level 1 and UKCC Level 2 England Netball coaching standard.

The coaching programme includes a First Aid Course, coaching workshops, safeguarding, an umpiring course and netball coaching itself. Although volunteers will need to be affiliated to England Netball, the course is free.

This project is funded by Sport England and supported by England Netball and Lancashire Sport.

Prior to drawing up the project, One Voice held a number of focus groups with the local community to uncover barriers to participation to sport by young females. The focus group also identified netball as the sport of choice for the participants.

The research demonstrated that participation was hindered by the lack of netball coaches in the BAME community. Participants from the South Asian community found it easier to engage with those who come from the same community where cultural barriers would not create obstacles.

The project will take place over nine months and will commence in October.
